Vanessa Barbay

Art Forms: Culture, Research, Writing

Residency Years: 2016, 2015

Lives / Works: Australia

Vanessa Barbay’s research responds to the formative effects of her father’s taxidermy practice and her relationships with Aboriginal peers who share cultural knowledge of natural environments. During Barbay’s younger years she learnt from Yuin and Wiradjuri friends, and during her research she was taught culture in the Kunwinjku community of Kunbarlanja in Western Arnhem Land. Barbay’s dissertation concerned both socio-cultural experience of the kinship system and mythopoeic connections to specific sites, with a focus on the cultural and material significance of earth pigments in rock and bark painting.

IN RESIDENCE 2015

During her residency at Bundanon, Barbay worked on a body of paintings for an exhibition titled ‘Ochre’ presented at the Shoalhaven City Arts Centre in mid-2015.

Barbay was also in residence at Bundanon in 2016.
