The Opera Project

Art Forms: Composition, Music/Sound, Performance

Residency Years: 2019, 2017, 2005

Lives / Works: Australia

The Opera Project (founded by Nigel Kellaway and Annette Tesoriero in 1996) has explored in multifarious ways the etymology of the word “opera” (its literal Italian meaning, “a work”) as well as its culturally implied meanings.

IN RESIDENCE 2019
Nigel Kellaway collaborated with Katia Molino, his mysterious interlocutor, on a drama in a house of “grace” – humble, gifted, in an “Arcadian” landscape. Dwelling on the notional “locus amoenus” redolent in Homer, Ovid and Virgil.

IN RESIDENCE 2018
The Opera Project worked on ‘ARCADIA’, a “three-pronged” project – a new musical composition for solo piano (built on Bach’s B minor Mass and military band music), a solo theatrical work and a literary exposition – reflecting on why they want to perform, where they come from and what they wish to share and communicate. Weaving factual details of Nigel Kellaway’s life (a kind of memoir) into a fantastical fiction, it will considered the actor as distanced narrator rather than active protagonist.

IN RESIDENCE 2017
During their residency, The Opera Project team further developed musical, textual and physical material for a new theatre work, THAT BODY OF WORK.
