Stuart Cooke

Art Forms: Poetry, Writing

Residency Year: 2019

Lives / Works: Australia

Stuart Cooke is a writer whose poems appear regularly in Australian journals and anthologies as well as overseas. Cooke was the winner of the Gwen Harwood Prize, the Dorothy Porter Prize, the New Shoots Prize, and a variety of grants, including an Asialink Fellowship and a New Work Grant from the Australia Council.

Cooke used his residency to work towards completing a new collection of poems that approached more-than-human forms of poetry and aesthetics. Inspired in equal measure by the complexity of ecological systems on the one hand and by baroque aesthetics on the other, the poems manifested a wide variety of formal innovations. The work reflected the abundance of ecological expressions, with their sonorous, semantic and visual qualities.
