Shaun Parker & Company

"As long as we have people like Shaun Parker creating shows, there is no need to fear for the future of arts in Australia"

- The Daily Telegraph

Shaun Parker & Company is an exhilarating and bold new Australian dance company that has exploded onto the international dance scene. Shaun Parker & Co creates critically acclaimed dance productions, which are renowned for their integration of stimulating choreographic forms, arresting musical scores and theatrical invention. Led by award winning Artistic Director and Choreographer Shaun Parker, his work is described as ‘so cutting edge it actually wanders off the edge of any single-word definition…’ Based in Sydney, the newly formed company has toured across Australia, France, The Netherlands and the UK, including a sold out season at London’s prestigious dance house Sadler’s Wells. Shaun Parker & Company has won two Australian Dance Awards, a Banksy Award, and the Argus Angel Award in the UK.

XY (working title) is Parker’s new dance theatre work that investigates the XY chromosome of the human male. Parker will investigate how the XY chromosome, from a chemical, biological, and psychological perspective, shapes the male brain on both a microscopic and macroscopic level. The XY chromosome is the point of departure for the determination of all systems of the human male species. Females have two of the same kind of sex chromosome (XX) and are called homogametic sex whilst males have two distinct sex chromosomes and are called the heterogametic sex. (XY). This system works in contrast with other mammal species, in which the heterogametic sex is female. With a background in Science (Monash University), Shaun Parker will work with dramaturge Veronica Neave during the time at Bundanon. They will research extensively the genetic and scientific background of the XY chromosome and its effect on the 'male'. Shaun Parker will work as the 'moving body', creating choreography and physical theatre vignettes which will be shaped and directed by Veronica Neave as an 'outside eye'.

What makes us happy? Happy as Larry is a funny, playful and poignant new dance show being developed partly at Bundanon. The show investigates the elusive nature of human happiness. This powerful production combines an intoxicating mix of ballet, break-dance, roller-skating and highly physical contemporary dance. The cast of characters is developed from the Enneagram, a psychological system that maps nine personality types: The Perfectionist; The Giver; The Performer; The Tragic Romantic; The Observer; The Devil’s Advocate; The Optimist; The Boss; and The Mediator – all rich inspiration for Shaun Parker’s insightful creativity. Set to a vibrant electro/acoustic score, the performers will bring fun and danger to the fore in this innovative and moving dance work.
