Matt Bromhead is an artist working primarily in drawing, collage and sculpture. He graduated from the Collage of Fine Arts in 2008, and since then has been the recipient of the Lloyd Rees drawing and painting prize and a finalist in numerous national competitions including the Churchie emerging artist award, Poimena art prize and the Agendo Art Award. In 2010 Matt was awarded an Australia Council Artstart grant and subsequently travelled through China, where he researched and performed traditional papermaking methods. He has recently returned from Perth where he exhibited in the 2014 Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe. Matt was represented by Ray Hughes Gallery from 2011-2013, and his upcoming exhibition at Wellington St Projects is the first major commercial exhibition he has had since parting ways with the gallery.
Chinese Checkingis a new group of work that Matt will be polishing and shaping at Bundanon, and will be based around a series of sculptural maquettes and large-scale collages. Incorporating leathers, marbles, timber, metals, papers and dental floss, the end result hopes to display the real-time drama of tension-based making.The residency will culminate in his exhibition at Wellington St Projects in September 2014.
