BUNDANON-RED GATE GALLERY ARTIST EXCHANGE

This is a chance for an Australian artist to create work in one of the most dynamic cities in the world - Beijing. Bundanon Trust is partnering with the renowned Red Gate Gallery to offer a four-week residency in one of Red Gate's studios in China's capital.

The Bundanon-Red Gate Artist Exchange

The Bundanon-Red Gate Artist Exchange exists to enable artists from both Australia and China to create work in a new and stimulating environment while also contributing to greater understanding between the two countries.

Australian artists are now invited to apply for a four-week residency in Beijing in May 2019.

The Bundanon-Red Gate Artist Exchange includes:

  • Return airfare from Australia to Beijing.
  • Stipend of AUD 2000
  • Accommodation and studio space for four weeks provided by Red Gate Gallery
  • Airport pick-up in Beijing
  • A welcome package with all the information you need for your stay.

You will need to organise your own:

  • Chinese visa
  • Health and travel insurance
  • Food.

This is the second year of the exchange. In 2017, Bundanon hosted Song Jiangshu and in 2018 Red Gate hosted Robyn Backen in Beijing.

Who can apply

The Red Gate residency is open to individual arts professionals who are Australian citizens or permanent residents.

The residency is most suitable for visual artists and writers, as the facilities at Red Gate are geared towards such artists. Artists in other disciplines are welcome to apply, but be aware that the studio spaces are not suitable for rehearsal. .


When to apply

Applications are now open and will close at midnight (Australian Eastern Daylight Time) on Monday 6 August 2018.

How to apply

All applications should be made on our online form. You will find a link to the form at the foot of this page. Although the form can be saved, we suggest you prepare your material offline first.

You will be asked either to create a Bundanon Trust account or to sign into an existing account. To create an account, we just need your name and email.

The online form will ask for the following information:

  • a short biography
  • a short project description, telling us what you intend to do during the residency
  • your equipment needs.

You will also be asked to submit examples of your work as support material. This can be writing, images, video, sound, or anything else that you consider best represents your practice.

Support material is submitted as either web links or as file uploads. Please note the following limits:

  • WRITING - we will only read 10 pages of written material, so please choose carefully. Maximum file size is 1 MB.
  • VIDEO - we will only watch three minutes of video, so it is in your interests to guide us to a video that has been edited to show your work to its best advantage. Video must be submitted via a link to a media platform.
  • AUDIO - we will only listen to three minutes of audio. Audio can be submitted either as a link to a media platform or as an uploaded file. In the latter case, each file must be in MP3 format and no more than 1 MB each.
  • IMAGES - we will only look at 10 images, each of which must be in JPEG format and no more than 1 MB each.

Please note: if you have attached a file to a saved form, you will need to attach it again before submitting.


Selection process

All applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • the artistic skills of the artist
  • the creative rationale for the proposed activity

Applications are assessed by arts industry peers, including Bundanon Trust representatives.
