Applying for a Residency

The Artist-in-Residence program at the Bundanon site was initiated in 1997 and is the largest such program in Australia, hosting around 300 artists each year on both our Bundanon and Riversdale sites. The properties are Arthur Boyd's gift to the Australian people, and his vision for Bundanon was for it to provide an inspirational haven for artists to pursue their practice.

Who can apply

The Bundanon Trust Artist-in-Residence program is open to arts professionals from Australia and overseas, working in all disciplines. This includes artists, writers, performers, producers, directors, composers, curators and educators. Residencies can be for research and development or for the creation of new work.

We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to apply.

When to apply

2018 Applications closed at midnight on 19 June 2017. We will open applications for 2019 in April 2018

We will notify applicants of the outcome in September 2017.

Selection process

Bundanon residencies are highly prized with a limited number of opportunities available per year. As a result, applications for residency are competitive. Each year we receive hundreds of applications, and the current success rate is approximately 30%.

All applications will be assessed against the following weighted criteria:

  • Artistic standing of applicant and artistic merit of the proposal (60%)
  • Benefit of the residency to the applicant's professional development or the successful realisation of the proposal (40%)

Applications are assessed with the advice of industry peers. In making the final decision, we also take into account the following factors:

  • artform spread
  • geographical spread
  • cultural diversity
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage of applicants
  • balance of emerging and established artists and companies
  • balance between artists new to Bundanon and artists who have had previous residency opportunities here.

Cost of residencies

The Artist-in-Residence program at Bundanon Trust is made possible through the financial support of public funding and individual donors. However this funding does not cover the full cost of the program.

From 2018 there will be a standard accommodation fee for Bundanon residencies of $50 per person per night, with a minimum stay of 7 nights.

Groups over ten people are accommodated at the Boyd Education Centre at Riversdale at the cost of $65 per person per night.

Bundanon does not offer stipends, living allowances or travel assistance. Catering is also residents' responsibility. We can recommend arrangements for group catering on request.

A number of applicants each year may be offered fellowships, which means we will waive the accommodation fee. We will make this decision based on applicants' ranking in the selection process outlined above, and our available resources.

However when applying for a residency, you should make your application on the assumption that you will need to pay the accommodation fee.
