Read MoreRhys Cousins is a Melbourne artist who is necessarily transdisciplinary, blending formal education in landscape architecture with works across painting, sculpture, installation, and digital screens.
Cousins’ practice delves into the phenomenology of landscape, through process as a driving enquiry into qualities of diversity, change, and variation. Winner of the 2022 emerging artist award at FortyFive Downstairs for his work ‘Pixel’, a textural reimagining of screen technologies, he has been a finalist in numerous art prizes including the Brett Whiteley Art Scholarship 2024, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2023 and Footscray Art Prize 2023 and has exhibited in solo and group shows across Australia.
During my residency at Bundanon, I will develop on an ongoing project titled “Screenscapes”, exploring the landscape across three scales: macro (textures and details), bodily (spatial experience), and locale (the greater landscape). Using photography, drawing, found materials, and texture collection, I’ll document my observations and feelings. I’ll then create mappings and collages using digital and physical media, including plaster, silicone, and assemblage techniques. The project investigates how contemporary landscapes are experienced and transformed by digital technology. I aim to foster meaningful exchanges with fellow artists and the community through informal discussions, while potentially contributing to workshops or exhibitions.
