Grace Turbo

Art Form: Music/Sound

Residency Year: 2024

Lives / Works: Sydney, Gadigal Country

Grace Turbo (NZ/AUS) is a singer-songwriter, pianist and sound artist living/working on Gadigal Land.

Her debut album Enjoy the Ache (2019) draws from neoclassical piano, anti-folk and classical singing echoing her music education in small town New Zealand.

With piano and electronic keys at the heart of her practice, Grace’s catalogue has through-lines of raw, minimalistic storytelling and soaring melodies. Recently influenced by regular performances in live bands for dream pop artist Gloomie, and indie rock artist Georgia Mulligan, Grace’s sound has absorbed a grunge and darkness that speaks to an exploration of time: still, bendy and non-linear. Grace’s new work features recorded sounds from the natural world in conjunction with sounds constructed with everyday objects, adding depth to piano driven stories that demand audience submission.

In Residence at Bundanon

During my time at Bundanon my focus is to find inspiration from nature and space, to gather recorded sounds from outdoor walks, and refine writing for my project “Yes, And.”

In “Yes, And.” I’m exploring how the past, present and future intersect. I’m examining circular, stacked and clock time to invite the listener to interrogate their own beliefs about the difference between reality and truth.

“Yes, And.” nods to the four seasons, the slowing of autumn, the grief of winter, softening into the hope of spring, and climaxing in the jubilation of summer.

Songs are weaved together instrumentally with considered transitions to create a circular feel, allowing for slow builds into rich sound scapes (inspired by the landscape) – lush synth sounds paired with pulsing, ethereal harmony. I seek to invite the listener to surrender to the infinite now.
