The Sea is Still a Mystery
Shadow Play

The Sea is Still a Mystery is a Shadow play performance by Jumaadi & Michael Toisuta

In this series of short live performances, Indonesian-Australian artist Jumaadi shares curious tales of the sea using intricate silhouettes made from paper and animal skins.

Bundanon’s Art Museum will come to life with rhythmic ocean sounds and a sequence of stories told through light and shadow.

Encompassing Javanese folklore, music and shadow puppetry, this short live performance explores our relationship with nature, history, colonialism and exploitation in the context of the ocean. Through beautifully crafted silhouettes, Jumaadi and composer Michael Toisuta present a contemporary take on wayang kulit, the traditional form of shadow-puppet plays that originated in Java and Bali.

Tales of Land and Sea

This event is part of Bundanon’s program of live events for current exhibition Tales of Land and Sea.

Tales of Land and Sea brings together three distinct projects exploring storytelling, mythological narratives, migration and the diasporic experience. Drawing from both personal narratives and Eastern mythologies, each project highlights age-old themes of longing, displacement, cultural connection and belonging.
