Read MoreNancy Constandelia is an Australian-born Chinese artist based in Sydney/Gadigal.
In 2016 she graduated with a Master of Fine Art with Excellence (Painting) from UNSW Art & Design and has since exhibited both nationally and internationally in both solo and group exhibitions and was presented at the 2018 Sydney Contemporary Art Fair. Constandelia has been a finalist in several art awards including the Church Emerging Art Prize, the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize, the Blake Prize and in 2014, whilst still a student, she won the Abstract Painting award in the Waverley Art Prize.
In 2019 she was granted a scholarship by the Art Gallery of NSW with an artist residency in Paris, France, at the Cite Internationale des Arts.
Constandelia’s work explores temporality and duration through the deliberate act of slow painting. Each painting documents time and space through the multi-layering of thinly brushed translucent veils of paint, creating a pentimento.
During this residency, Nancy Constandelia will be immersing herself and examining the surrounding light and landscape of Bundanon and producing new colour studies. Constandelia will also be hand-making her own new pigments and paints on site using collected objects and found material from the Bundanon landscape and creating a reference system of colours inspired from the Bundanon landscape. This will culminate into a colour diary with recipes of each colour which will be used as a resource for future paintings. Constandelia will also be simultaneously creating new work for upcoming projects.
