Jacqui Shelton is an artist and writer born on Barada Barna land, central QLD, and based in Narrm, Melbourne. Their work uses text, performance, film-making and photography to explore the complications of performance and presence, and how voice, language, and image can collaborate or undermine one another. Shelton is especially interested in how emotion and embodied experience can be made public and activated to reveal a complex politics of living-together, and the tensions this makes visible.
Whilst in residence, Shelton will be developing a new performance and video work about human engagement with the natural environment and bodies of water, using the notion of submersion and vibration to examine how climate change affects lived experience. The work will be presented as a propositional monument to a collective emotion, exploring the affective impact climate change has on bodies and their relations. This will be furthered through a critical contemplation on landscape photography’s colonial past, and how an engagement in endangered languages can be used to speak to this.
