Talk with the Brown family

The family of Yuin painter Reuben Ernest Brown (Uncle Ben Brown) share the stories behind key works from The River and the Sea.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Reuben Ernest Brown (Uncle Ben Brown, 1928–2009) was a Yuin man who painted the Shoalhaven region from the 1980s to the 2000s. He embarked on his artistic career in retirement, enrolling at the Bomaderry TAFE to study Aboriginal Art and Cultural Practice with his wife Mona at 65 years of age.

A strong advocate for Aboriginal reconciliation, culture and heritage, and a vocal leader in the South Coast community, Uncle Ben depicted his environment with vibrant colour and joy. His bright paintings demonstrate his love of the local landscape and natural eye for composition, coupled with a wry sense of humour.

The importance that Uncle Ben placed on engagement with culture is continued through the life and work of the Brown family, many of whom are key figures in the community today.
