The creative duo of Haji Oh and Michiyo Miyake explores the possibilities of collaborative work between makers of ‘textile’ and ‘text’– both of which originate from the same Latin word texere, meaning ‘to weave’. (The root ‘textus’ means ‘things woven or knitted’ in Latin.) Focusing on the (dis)similarity between the process of textile and text creation, Haji and Michiyo work together to approach narratives that are often difficult to express or are ignored that are interwoven within history. 

Haji Oh is a visual artist of third generation Zainichi Korean descent born in Japan, who utilizes the techniques of weaving and unraveling textiles to shed light on the untold stories of people whose lives have touched hers. She has also used photographs, texts and sounds in her installations.

Michiyo Miyake is a writer and translator, born in Japan, based in Sydney. She has been involved in various art and literary projects.

While in residence, they will work on a project based on research concerning issues of detained refugees and undocumented migrants both in Australia and Japan.
